Durand Union Station

The Durand Union Station is one of the most photographed railroad stations in the country. The station was built in 1903 by Grand Trunk Railroad. The building is called chateau style. It was a busy station servicing 3000 passengers a day and had 42 passenger trains, 22 mail trains and 78 freight trains pass through on a daily basis. In 1974 the railway closed the station and there were plans to tear it down. The city of Durand filed an injunction to stop demolition and eventually bought the station for $1. With Amtrak as a tenant, the city was able to get federal grant money to restore the building. Today Amtrak comes from Port Huron and stops at Durand on it's way to Chicago and makes a return trip the same day.
Inside there is a railroad museum and a room that is used for events.
When we were there, they were in the throws of decorating for Christmas but there were many interesting railway memorabilia and old photos. We all would like to return.
It is listed on the registry of national historic places.
