I hope that everyone likes my new holiday blog decorations and background. I change out the background about 4 times a year....it's fun to do if not sometimes frustrating. It's not easy to find a background that I like that doesn't distract too much from my photos.
Ok, now to really get ready for the holidays, decorating is half done, no shopping done and my annual family calendar nor even started.......better get with it.

Lopsided House

This house  is so interesting......all angles and corners and jut outs....did someone build it this way? The hands of time have twisted it into an odd edifice. You can't tell from this picture but it leans out towards the street.

Third Man Records/Shinola

Third Man Records
These two establishments are side by side on Canfield just off of Cass. We really enjoyed looking around and Mary Jo even bought some stuff. We heard that Third Man will soon be pressing vinyl records....supposedly the next new thing....old to me.
Third Man Records owned by Jack White
 Love the design inside!
You have to be as old as me to remember this....a listening booth. Record stores had them so you could listen to a 45 or an album before deciding to buy it. I really miss record stores...used to pursue on a Saturday afternoon. The album covers were great. In the '80s there was a used record store in Ferndale. I loved that place.

Shinola
Wow, this was a high end store....couldn't afford anything in here. Mostly specialized in watches (they go for over $1000 ), bikes and leather goods. Great place inside and fun to see.

There were several boutique type stores across the street that we looked at. Nice little area.

Unexpected Places

In October, we went to take pictures at City Sculpture in Detroit. Whenever we go out it seems that something interesting happens. When we went to see the churches we met a caretaker at Sweetest Heart of Mary who told us about the history of the church as well as the neighborhood and when we were at the sculpture garden we met the artist and heard all about his art display, how he bought the property and so on. On our way to visit Third Man Records on Canfield we turned down a street......wow, what a surprise. The street was cobblestone and all the houses were Victorian....most restored. It was amazing as it was right in midtown and just so unexpected. It was a lovely tree lined street and I would have loved to have walked it, however, there was some construction and big equipment parked in the street. I can't remember the name of the street but it was near Canfield close to Cass. Only I could get so excited over cobblestone streets ;-) Maybe next summer we can go back.

Look at those beautiful stained glass leaded window in the house on the right....I've got to go back.

Thanksgiving Day

I really wanted to get outside and go for a walk and shoot some photos on Thanksgiving day but it was raining and gloomy. However I was determined, so after dinner I went to Lower Huron and took all these photos from my car.....never got out once....Lol.

You know, even this depressing weather can be beautiful in it's own way. I bet if I could have walked the trail (which I couldn't have anyway because I hurt my knee) I would have found all kind of interesting things....fungi, old bird nest, interesting bark and so on.

Happy Fall

One more month and winter is officially here. Still some beautiful colors out there but the temperatures have plummeted here in Michigan, Snow flurries, sleet and rain predicted for today. I hope to go for a little walk tomorrow....pending how my knee feels. Dinner than a walk sounds good.

It makes no sense.....

 at the DIA
There is so much to see at the art institute but somehow the old favorites keep drawing us back.

Have you heard of the ghost of the DIA? Well, I was lucky enough to catch her reflection in the mirror and look, she is not scary at all.
All the art work surrounding us and we are shooting photos out the windows...funny.

This window could be a painting hanging on the wall.

Detroit After Dark

I really enjoyed this photography exhibit. Took a few pictures....no sign saying not to. Detroit at night doesn't get any better than this.
There were a lot of the Detroit music scene...some excellent hip hop groups with the city in the back ground, old groups like the Stooges, Patti Smith and hubby, clubs like Bookies, The Vanity and the Grandy. If you have a chance it is well worth a look. I think it runs until Spring.
I love this one....neighborhood bar in Delray....since torn down but then most of Delray is gone.

Like I wouldn't want to be out in the street on a night like this.....really captures the mood.

DIA Exhibits

We went to the DIA last week in hope of seeing 3 exhibits......all but one was closed and that was the Detroit After Dark Photo Exhibit (more on that later).
Thalasse is a hanging by an artist named Swoon. It was hanging in the main gallery but that whole section was closed off as they were preparing for a gala event.
We were able to get a peek at it from the Rivera court but could not
photograph the whole thing. Definitely an interesting art piece.
Bitter/Sweet: Coffee, Tea, Chocolate
This exhibits opens November 20th and looks very interesting indeed. It engages all 5 senses and you are able to smell and taste the tea and coffee related beverages. So, that is a good reason to go back to the Art Institute and a great idea for a cold winter day.
See DIA link below for more information.
