Histroy of Brookgreen Gardens

I post so many photos and brag about Brookgreen that I thought, well, finally, more information is needed.

When Archer Huntington and noted sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington, his wife, purchased property in South Carolina in 1930, the original idea was to build a retreat from the world while Anna, who had been diagnosed with tuberculosis, recovered her strength. However, 18 months later, on July 13, 1931, the property was incorporated under the laws of South Carolina as a private, not-for-profit corporation entitled "Brookgreen Gardens, A Society for Southeastern Flora and Fauna."
The couple built their winter home across from Brookgreen and named it
Atalaya. It is located across route 17 is now included in Huntington Beach State Park. For a few dollars you can visit the home and also see Anna Huntington's studios.

Brookgreen Gardens displays many of Anna's sculptures as well as may other artists. There are also several indoor museums for smaller pieces. All the art is seen with a perfect vista to show them at their best.

Big and....
and small

A long, almost mile long drive leads into the garden. Today, April 1st, both sides of the road are  lined with the most beautiful display of Dogwood trees and hundreds of Azaleas. I have never seen it more beautiful than today.
People come from all over the country to see this spring display of
azaleas.

On a personal note, I find that the garden is most welcoming when it comes to photography.  Our own Cranbrook Gardens in Michigan, while beautiful, it is not happy to have any photography there and they  follow you around questioning your intentions. Not at Brookgreen.......a photographers dream!

The Live Oak Allee is one of my favorite places to stroll. The under plantings are changed out spring and summer.

I also enjoy the many reflecting pools and fountains. Not to forget all the many benches to sit and enjoy.....much appreciated by me. Also there is a cafe and several places that sell light refreshments.....my fav is the old kitchen garden.
Oh, I haven't mentioned all the birds.....wow, a bird watchers dream.
So, if you are down Myrtle Beach way be sure to spend some time at this lovely garden.I am fortunate that my family lives only 15 minutes away and I get to enjoy Brookgreen whenever I am here for a visit.
