Michigan Central Station

The old train depot is making somewhat of a comeback.....although into what is unknown. The owner made a deal with the city to acquire some land and in return he agreed to start to restore the station. It took almost a year to rid the inside of debris and make it safe and then they began to put in $2 million dollars worth of windows. It really looks different with the windows.  The day after we were there shooting the news had a bit about it. It will be interesting to see what becomes of it because there had been a cry to tear it down.

The train station was built in 1914 and was very widely used and at it's peak 200 trains left the station every day. Over 4 thousand passenger used the station daily and 3 thousand worked inside in the office building. The last train (Amtrak) to leave the station was in 1988 and it has been closed since. The inside is basically destroyed and much effort and money would be needed to restore it to it's former self.
